Manufacturing engineers wanted to address customers’ needs

The global leader of the cable industry has a manufacturing heart

Where early career engineers can help deal with even more challenging customers’ needs.

Andrea Pirondini, Prysmian’s Chief Operating Officer, tells how he is strengthening his manufacturing team with Fast Forward Operations, the program created to drive the supply system towards customer performance excellence.

Prysmian’s reputation is built upon two pillars: its people and its manufacturing excellence.  Prysmian Group has chosen to deal with the requests of the market from the very heart of the manufacturing process, by including professionals with 3-7 years of experience into the company through an innovative career advancement program named Make It.

With Make it, Prysmian posits itself as an employer of choice for talented engineers who are looking for a manufacturing career. Pirondini says: “We are a solid industrial company with some 90 factories worldwide, and our goal is to show our managers that we have created a new way to scout and hire talented engineers with some years of experience as we try hard to introduce and retainhigh quality resources, while minimizing the risk of losing them along the way."

“People are key to the customer-centered approach we are pursuing, as we aim to truly understand their needs in order to grant excellence from the very outset, through project completion and beyond”

Our operations functions are going through a decisive evolution, as we recently adopted the Fast Forward approach: Prysmian’s answer to the need to improve and harmonize production practices, avoid wasted resources and leverage on employee know-how and expertise. “With Fast Forward we draw together new and existing initiatives with a focus on increased value for the customer, speed and adaptation across people, production resources, and production technology. Prysmian is a 4.0 factory where state-of-the-art automation and human added value merge to improve efficiency and competitiveness.”

The main aim of Fast Forward is to stimulate momentum and to allow a higher level of participation from everyone in the company. Pirondini says: “We are finding better ways to produce and deliver quality, excellence and cost effectiveness. We constantly need to learn from one another, and share our best know how in a contamination process that makes the company excel. Fast Forward communicates very well the essence of what we aim to achieve: speed and capability to adapt to market fluctuations.”

“Fast Forward Operations is helping us get the best from our international R&D assets as well: 17 excellence centers, more than 500 professionals and 4.500 patented technological innovations.”

“Young professionals, even if with no cable experience, can bring fresh blood and help us to further build upon what we have already achieved. That is why we focus our Make It campaign on engineers with 3-7 years of experience, outstanding skills and a real passion for manufacturing, despite having little or no cable experience.”
